Hex cluster decommissioning:
The old UCT cluster (hex.uct.ac.za) is being shut down in January 2020. If you no longer require access please can you let us know if you acknowledged usage of the cluster in your research. If you still require access please inform the administrators so that a new account can be created on hpc.uct.ac.za.
New wall time:
When we implemented the new cluster the wall time was significantly reduced due to the number of frivolous long term jobs being run on hex. The current wall time for the default partition is 3 days which is in-line with many other international HPC institutes, however there have been several requests to increase this beyond 3 days. We have created a questionnaire to gauge research requirements relating to HPC resources in order to determine if changes to the current parameters are required. The results will be published early in the new year. We cannot guarantee that all requests are catered for as there is a tension between wall time, number of cores and queuing time.
We will be purchasing a small number of Matlab licenses and the last two items in the questionnaire relate to usage of Matlab and Matlab Toolboxes. If you are interested in using Matlab on the cluster we would greatly appreciate your feedback and opinion.
